Going through "The Change"? Here are three key areas to focus on for a smoother transition

Many of us are familiar with the term menopause, which refers to the stage when a woman can no longer naturally conceive due to the gradual loss of follicles (egg cells). This typically happens between the ages of 46 and 55. Menopause is officially marked by the day a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. However, it's important to discuss the phase preceding menopause, known as perimenopause. This period can begin in your mid-30s and is characterized by noticeable changes such as irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, depression, anxiety, weight gain, insomnia, anger, joint pain, irritability, thinning hair, decreased libido, and various other symptoms. For some, these symptoms can be significantly disruptive and debilitating. Here are the top three proven areas to focus on to help manage these symptoms:

  1. Sufficient rest/sleep

  2. Managing stress

  3. Personal/Self care

Sufficient Rest/sleep

For the majority of people, 7-9 hours of sleep is ideal for maintaining health and alertness. To encourage a restful night's sleep, consider creating a sleep-friendly environment, sticking to a routine, practicing relaxation techniques, and avoiding screens from TVs, phones, and computers an hour before bed. Additionally, reduce the consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine during the day.

Managing stress

Stressful situations beyond our control include traffic and the actions of others. It's important to concentrate on what we can manage, such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, engaging in relaxation activities, discovering hobbies, staying socially and mentally active, avoiding procrastination (as it leads to stress), and managing your environment.

Personal/Self Care

Self-care encompasses a variety of activities like exercising, attending regular medical checkups, getting massages, maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in enjoyable activities such as listening to music or dancing, spending time with friends and family, walking in nature (which also helps reduce stress), and learning to say 'No' to things you don't want to do.

Conclusion

By focusing on adequate rest, effective stress management, and self-care, you can navigate the transition through menopause with grace and resilience. Implementing these strategies will not only ease your journey but also lead to improved physical, mental and emotional health. Embrace this phase of life as an opportunity for growth and renewal!
